Wendy Williams' guardian tried to block doc to avoid criticism, A&E alleges - USA TODAY

A&E Television Networks pushed back against Wendy Williams' temporary guardian in court last month, arguing she moved to block "Where Is Wendy Williams?" from airing to "silence" criticism, according to newly unsealed documents. Sabrina Morrissey, Williams' temporary guardian, filed a lawsuit against A&E in New York County Supreme Court in February, seeking to stop Lifetime's documentary "Where Is Wendy Williams?" from airing. But in court documents that were recently unsealed and obtained by USA TODAY, Rachel Strom, an attorney for A&E Networks, argued Morrissey tried to shut down the documentary only after seeing the way Williams' guardianship was depicted in the trailer. "Only after seeing the documentary's trailer and realizing her role in Ms. (Williams') life may be criticized did Ms. Morrissey enlist the courts to unconstitutionally silence that criticism," the filing alleged. USA TODAY has re...

Andrew Buchan on stepping behind the camera for ITV's Passenger, and the "seed" that inspired the drama - Radio Times

Image
I should say that acting is still where my heart is, but writing is something I've been burning to do for years. When I approached production company SISTER, I had an idea for a story that I felt I hadn't seen before. Something that combined several worlds, several genres. I've always been drawn to shows that lure us into a false sense of familiar, then slap us with the unknown. Shows like Ben Mendelsohn's The Outsider, Fargo, True Detective, The OA, Stranger Things. They take something known, something traditional, and shake it, oddify it. The seed for Passenger came from growing up in the North West. I grew up in Bolton, have family in Oldham and have mates in small villages dotted across the Pennines. There's a magic to these places. A warmth. A shorthand to the way people act and speak. In every corner of every pub, anecdotes are the antidote. Whatever the hardship, whatever the struggle, people fight back with stories. With wit. No matter how dark or desperate ...

The Philadelphia Police Department's Missing Persons Unit is back on the case this week as Fox's Alert: Missing Persons Unit returns for Season 2. It's been about a year since the Season 1 finale, and star Dania Ramirez teased quite a bit to Deadline about the upcoming installment, revealing that the second season will be "a lot lighter" now that the drama with Nikki (Ramirez) and Jason (Scott Caan) have some answers about their son Keith. "What's great about this season is that we really got a lot of answers at the end of last season to wrap up that whole drama for Jason and for Nikki," Ramirez said. "They get to put that behind them now. So now it's really getting to the cases of the week, and that's the drama of the show." According to Ramirez, her character will be dealing with "a lot more layers on an everyday basis," which might involve her working on her impulse control a...

Kenneth Mars obituary | Movies - The Guardian

Image
Kenneth Mars, who has died aged 75 from pancreatic cancer, was cherished by audiences for his unhinged comic performances in two of the writer-director Mel Brooks's finest and funniest movies, The Producers (1968) and Young Frankenstein (1974). Along with performers including Gene Wilder, Madeline Kahn and Cloris Leachman, he created some of the most sublimely silly moments in US film comedy. For all that, he longed for his acting range to be recognised. Asked in 2001 what he would change about the perception of himself, he replied: "That I am only a comedic actor – I would like to be considered for more dramatic roles." Small wonder, then, that he cited as his favourite among his own work the little-seen 1971 drama Desperate Characters, in which he appeared opposite Shirley MacLaine and gave what the critic Roger Ebert called "a deeply felt, complex performance" as a New York lawyer whose marriage is disintegrating. Mars was born in Chicago, Illinois, the son o...
