Joe Morton: Improved numbers show leadership, funding matter - Alabama Daily News

By Dr. Joe Morton Dr. Joe Morton State Superintendent of Education Dr. Eric Mackey shared good news about public education during the April 11, 2024, meeting of the State Board of Education. Alabama high schools graduated more students in the spring of 2023, compared to 2022, and, equally important, more of them are ready for the next steps in their lives. Being College and Career Ready (CCR) took on additional significance in 2023 when the Alabama Legislature passed Act 2023-365, which changed the date established by a State Board of Education rule requiring all high school students, beginning with the Class of 2028, to earn at least one college and career readiness indicator prior to graduation. The State Board's graduating Class of 2028 became the Alabama Legislature's Class of 2026; it is now the law of the land, and it was a good act. However, as these changes to graduation requirements were unfolding, there was no funding appropriated to help high schools, espec

Christopher Nolan Cast Cillian Murphy in Batman Begins After Seeing 28 Days Later - TheWrap

The 2002 zombie film "28 Days Later" has been key to actor Cillian Murphy's career in more ways than one. Not only did the film put him on the map, but Murphy — who is very likely to score an Oscar for his performance in Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" this month — says it also got him cast in "Batman Begins." While speaking to Josh Horowitz for the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast, Murphy revealed that he earned his "Batman Begins" role as Scarecrow after Nolan saw him in the zombie film. While speaking of the similarities between Nolan and "28 Days Later" director Danny Boyle, Murphy said, "I know that they both have immense respect for each other. Chris saw '28 Days Later' before he cast me in 'Batman Begins.' I know they're fans of each other's work. They're singular voices, you know, they really are unique filmmakers, and they have that same passion and energy on

Fran Drescher says she 'missed out' on having kids, would have been a 'good mom' - AOL

Gina Vivinetto Fran Drescher says she 'missed out' on having kids, would have been a 'good mom' "The Nanny" star Fran Drescher may have played a caregiver to three on-screen children, but in real life she never had kids of her own — and she sometimes regrets that. "I think I would have been a good mom," she told The Cut, "and sometimes I think I kind of missed out on that." Drescher, 62, was diagnosed with uterine cancer in 2000, 15 years after being raped at gunpoint during a home invasion. As part of her cancer treatment, she underwent a hysterectomy. "It was strange — and kind of poetic — that my reproductive organs, of all things, had cancer," she wrote in a 2019 essay for InStyle. "But it was also an amazing affirmation that pain finds its way to exactly the right place in the body if you don't deal with it. "Since I hadn't been paying attention to my own vulnerabilities, my pain from the rape lodged itself

Pretty Woman' cast: Where are they now? - Entertainment Weekly News

Pretty Woman , the (admittedly problematic) fairy-tale romance between Hollywood sex worker Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) and wealthy businessman Edward Lewis (Richard Gere), was not only a blockbuster when it debuted in 1990, but was also a surprisingly risqué release from Walt Disney Pictures. What started as a dark cautionary tale titled 3,000 — in reference to the amount of money Vivian earns for spending the week with her would-be Prince Charming — the script, like its heroine, was given an extensive makeover. To quote Vivian's BFF and roommate Kit (Laura San Giacomo), it became a "Cinda-f—in'rella" story thanks to rewrites from original screenwriter J.F. Lawton and input from director Garry Marshall and producer Laura Ziskin. Several actresses were pursued for the role, including Jennifer Jason Leigh, Molly Ringwald, and Michelle Pfeiffer, before the studio eventually avoided making a "big mistake" and circled back to relative newcomer Roberts. John Carroll Lynch goes West on 'Outlaw Posse' - Boulder Weekly

Looking back on his performances at the Regis Jesuit High School in Denver, the Boulder-born artist can now admit that maybe he was a little too intense.  "I would get really mad at people who weren't as serious as I was about it," he says. "Which is not a great way to collaborate." That passion has since taken Lynch a long way from his Front Range beginnings. One of the most recognizable character actors of the last three decades, the 60-year-old has appeared in major blockbuster films like Fargo , Zodiac , Shutter Island and The Trial of the Chicago 7 , to name a few, under the direction of greats such as the Coen Brothers, David Fincher and Martin Scorsese.  Lynch's most recent performance comes in the
