Clear Mascara Is The Essential Your Makeup Kit Is Missing - Refinery29

Posted: 27 Feb 2019 09:24 AM PST

Beyoncé has given us a lot over the years — Dangerously In Love, the 2009 Inaugural Ball performance for the Obamas, and a few iconic Vogue covers that will forever sit on our coffee tables. Through all that, she's also given us some serious hair and makeup inspiration, and we take a lot of notes from Bey's beauty handbook. So, when she posted an up-close selfie of a subtle cat-eye with bare lashes, our only thought was: Is this what we're doing now?

Jess Glynne’s no-makeup stunt at the Brits was trite, skin-deep feminism - The Guardian

Posted: 22 Feb 2019 07:44 AM PST

Ladies, prepare to be inspired, empowered and generally wowed. You see, I did a courageous thing this morning: I left the house without makeup. Strangers stared as I passed by, moved by my bravery. Some even burst into tears.

Actually, that's a barefaced lie. Nobody gave a damn that I wasn't wearing makeup, which felt like a slap in the face considering the rapturous reaction Jess Glynne got for taking off her makeup at the Brits. If you missed this, Glynne removed her fake eyelashes and makeup at the award show while singing her hit single Thursday, which contains the lyrics: "I won't wear makeup on Thursday / 'Cause who I am is enough." (Detail-oriented readers will recall the Brits were on a Wednesday, but we'll gloss over that.) Glynne was joined on stage by 70 women who also removed their makeup. According to a press release, the performance was "a gesture to remind ourselves and everyone else that it's OK and we are enough as we are". One imagines it was also supposed to be a gesture that would get the singer lots of press, which it did: the act was described as "nothing short of inspirational" and a feminist moment.

It's great that Glynne used her platform to promote self-acceptance. Nevertheless, this stunt made me roll my mascara-caked eyes. Saying something vacuous about beauty standards or posting #nomakeup selfies has become a go-to PR technique for celebrities hoping to seem relevant, and it is starting to feel trite. It also feels disingenuous to suggest a bare face is liberating considering we're in a cultural moment where conspicuous makeup is out, and the "natural" look is in. The skincare market is booming as women turn to expensive creams and serums in an exhausting effort to look effortless. So, while I commend Glynne for the sentiment, I reckon I'll avoid the skin-deep feminism and keep my makeup on, thanks.

This before and after selfie is the reason why Helen Mirren is an empowering beauty influencer for women now - The Telegraph

If there is one A-lister you can count on for straight-talking beauty, it's Dame Helen Mirren; the woman who admitted that moisturiser probably does "f**k all" while fronting a L'Oreal skincare campaign for, well, moisturiser. "It just makes me feel better," she said at the time. "I'm not setting standards for others, all I can do is be who I am".

While actively, she may not be trying to set beauty standards, the honesty she lives by is catching. Case in point: The time she dyed her hair candyfloss pink aged 68, admitting she saw it on someone else and thought "that would be cool. I might have a go at that".

Here's What Your Favorite Celebrity Couple Says About Your Love Life - Elite Daily

Posted: 27 Feb 2019 07:07 AM PST

Our favorite celebrities are almost like parts of our family. We grow super attached to them, stay updated on their love lives, and follow all their major moments on social media. Take, for instance, me and Emily Blunt (and her hot hubby John Krasinski). You'd think we were practically BFFs by the way I ship the two of them. Celebrity couples are especially fun to analyze — who doesn't love following all the drama of people hooking up, breaking up, and falling in love? Turns out, though, your favorite celebrity couple might reveal something about you, too: the way you approach romantic relationships. Seriously!

The couple you relate to the most probably says something about your priorities as a romantic partner. Maybe you prefer to keep things calm and stable, or maybe you really like to mix it up. There's a famous couple out there for every type of dating dynamic, from steadfastly committed to totally tumultuous. To get some expert opinions on the major couples out there, I reached out to Lindsey Metselaar, host of the dating podcast We Met At Acme. Read on to find out what your favorite celebrity couple reveals about your love life.

If you can't get enough of Justin and Hailey, you're probably a big believer in second chances and someone's ability to change. "If this is your favorite couple, you believe that you can change someone and have a happy ending with them at the end of the day," Metselaar says. In the case of these two, it worked out, but be careful to put too much energy into someone who might not be ready or willing to make major changes.

Miley Cyrus & Liam Hemsworth

They say opposites attract, and these two are a great example of this! "If you are attracted to your opposite, then Southern Miley and Australian Liam are the couple you identify with the most," Metselaar notes. They've also had some bumps along the road. They fell in love at a young age, got engaged, and then broke up for several years before ultimately ending up back together. "Miley and Liam are the perfect example of how you need to take time apart in order to realize what you have," Metselaar says.

Cardi B & Offset

These two keep their love lives super public — both the good times and the bad. As you might remember, he proposed to her live on stage; later, she addressed rumors about his alleged cheating (Elite Daily has reached out to Offset's reps for comment and has not heard back by the time of publication); they eventually called things off — but after their Grammys appearance together, it appears they might be working it out. "It's clear that they support each other, but Offset definitely has a wandering eye. They are both people who love attention," Metselaar explains. If you love them together, you enjoy the drama of a relationship that ebbs and flows… just be wary not to get hurt in the process. "I'd be careful of not getting involved with someone who cares more about their image than you," Metselaar warns. Drama can add spice to a relationship, but it's not worth it if it causes trust issues or jealousy.

Emily Blunt & John Krasinski

It doesn't get any cuter than Emily Blunt and John Krasinski. These two are proof that support is at the center of any great romantic relationship. "These are two very talented actors who equally build each other up," Metselaar explains. "When Emily wins an award, John is always tearing up with joy for his wife." Separately, they're each phenomenal, but put them together and they're a total dream team. If you ship these two, you're looking for someone to cheer you on and be your number-one fan.

Beyonce & Jay-Z

"Beyonce and Jay-Z are the ultimate power couple," Metselaar says. "If you want to be them, you crave power and success in your relationship." You're looking for someone who is ambitious, strong, and not afraid to ask for what they want in a romantic partnership. These two are an example of a couple that can take on the world together, through thick and thin. They're always ready to make a statement — no wonder they're such cultural icons.

Ellen Degeneres & Portia De Rossi

Together, Ellen and Portia form one of Hollywood's most stable and loving relationships. "For being a celebrity couple, Ellen and Portia mostly keep things low-key," Metselaar remarks. "If you want to be like Ellen and Portia, you want to find someone you can connect with on a deeper level." You're hoping for a lasting commitment without any bells and whistles — just you and the person you love. And you also want a relationship that can keep you constantly entertained and content, even when you've been together for years.

John Legend & Chrissy Teigen

There's a reason everyone loves John Legend and Chrissy Teigen — they're always so much fun! They also care deeply about keeping their relationship special. "It's clear that they both have strong family values, yet they take the time to cook together, make each other laugh, and have special date nights," Metselaar says. "If you admire John and Chrissy, you are not afraid to call your partner out and to focus on the lightness and humor of being in a relationship." You recognize that having fun is an important element of enjoying a life with someone, and you want a partner who will always keep you laughing.

Did anyone else just learn a ton of great new intel? I know I did… and I'm definitely going to start analyzing all my feelings about celebrity couples from now on. There's something to learn from each of these partnerships, and we can definitely look to them for examples of what to do (and what not to do) to help your relationship succeed. Here's hoping I can take a little bit from every couple to incorporate into my own love life.
