The Houston area is home to some big names.

Giants of the arts, sports, entertainment and business worlds, among others, practice their trade here and even call it home.

Many of the city's most high-profile figures are also natives or grew up in a town or suburb close to it.

The list of Houston-area born celebrities is long.

For example, former two-time, world heavyweight champion boxer George Foreman was born in Marshall, Texas and grew up in Houston's Fifth Ward.

Singers Beyoncé and Solange Knowles were born and grew up in Houston.

Televangelist and Lakewood Church pastor Joel Osteen was also born in Houston. Osteen continues to run his business and church here.

However, the same things that make the area attractive to natives, such as the food, cost of living, diverse population and warm weather, also make it appealing to outsiders.

Sometimes, even those famous outsiders who come to Houston for one reason or another end up staying a while. A few even make it their permanent residence.
