What people see in movies most of the time has literally nothing to do with reality. Every so often there should be a reminder that the shows are nothing more than scripted and practiced situations with actors who have sat in the make up chair for hours before setting foot on set. Yet the thought of becoming a movie star has always been "the dream".

Fame, fortune and being loved by many is a very tempting idea but when it comes to making the first step everyone is thinking of a long educational process in acting school and countless hours spent studying. In Hollywood, there are many actors who have taken this path, but there are also many who never even stepped foot in acting school. Bellow, there is a list of the ten top picks of actors and actresses who became famous without obtaining an acting diploma.

10 Sarah Michelle Gellar

After the movie, Gellar continued working on several small parts and finally in 1993 she was signed to act on the popular tv series All My Children. Since then she has starred in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Cruel Intentions.

9 Anna Kendrick

Anna Kendrick started going to auditions ever since she was a child. She was trying out in theater productions. At the age of 12, Anna was playing a supporting role in the 1998 Broadway musical High Society. The role brought her a Theater World Award and a nomination for a Tony Award.

The first movie she ever starred in was called Camp and for this role, she was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award in the category Best Debut Performance. The big break for Anna came in 2008 when she played the role of Jessica Stanley in the movie Twilight.

Jim Carrey has a very difficult childhood. His family was very poor and at one point they were living in a van. Despite the fact that he had to leave high school to work various jobs to help his family, Jim was very determined to become a stand-up comedian.

After his father was stabbed to death, his mother became ill, so Eddie and his brother had to live in a foster home for over a year.

During this time in his life, Eddie found escape in television, he used to watch all kinds of shows. When he reached 8th grade, he started performing as a stand-up comedian. For years he performed as a comedian until he was chosen for the lead role in the movie 48 Hours. This role opened the door to success.

Natalie Portman got her first job as a model when she was only eleven years old when an agent from Revlon first saw her in Long Island. She transitioned to acting very quickly as she got tired of being a model.

Her first role was in the movie The Professional where she portrays a young girl who tried to figure out how to be an assassin. Since then Portman has been the lead in movies such as V for Vendetta, Leon and of course the Academy Award-winning role in Black Swan.

5 Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron did not take acting classes but she sure worked harder than any student out there. She moved to New York from her hometown Benoni in South Africa at the age of 18. She lived in a bad hotel room, while she supported herself from her job as a model. Her career began when a talent agent noticed her in a bank while she was arguing with the bank teller.

Theron needed her last check to be cashed or she would have ended up on the street. After a heavy argument, she managed to sort her problem. Her "performance" impressed the agent as in a few months she had her first role in the movie Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest.

Will Smith is one of the most recognized actors and musicians in the industry. He has two Oscar nominations and four Grammy Awards. It all began when he turned down a scholarship to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) because he wanted to be a rapper.

Instead, he started as MC of the hip hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince were his childhood friend DJ Jazzy was a producer. Smith first made a career in music and in 1993 he landed his first big role in the movie Six Degrees of Separation which was followed by Bad Boys in 1995.

At the very beginning of her career, Cameron Diaz was spotted by a photographer Jeff Dunas who was eager to work with her and suggested that she finds an agent in order to start. Diaz decided to become a model started working with the modeling agency called Elite.

In 1998 she landed a small role in the movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and four years later she finally got her big role in The Mask. Today she is known by her roles in Charlie's Angels, There's Something About Mary and Vanilla Sky.

Jason Statham landed his first role as an actor at the age of 31. Prior to that, he was working as a fake jewelry salesman on the black market. Since his work was on the street he was noticed by a talent agent who led him to an audition for Guy Ritchie.

1 Matthew McConaughey

Matthew McConaughey was born and raised in Texas by James Donald "Jim" McConaughey who ran an oil pipe supply business and Mary Kathleen a kindergarten teacher. While growing up McConaughey had an interest in following the footsteps of his father instead he was set to become an actor.

He started off with roles in commercials and small parts in student films. His luck turned when he met a casting director who introduced McConaughey to Richard Linklater. This laded the first real role in the movie Dazed and Confused and the rest is history.
