Kristen Stewart has made her debut as Princess Diana.

Principal photography has begun on Pablo Larrain's Spencer, with production unveiling the first glimpse of Stewart as the young royal.

Written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, the film focuses on one weekend in the life of Princess Diana, as she spends the Christmas holiday with the Royal Family at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, and decides to leave her marriage to Prince Charles.

Filming will take place in Germany and the UK and a fall 2021 launch is anticipated. 2022 marks the 25th anniversary of Diana's death.

The cast also includes BAFTA nominee Timothy Spall (Mr. Turner), Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) and Sean Harris (Mission: Impossible).

The film is produced by Juan de Dios Larraín (Jackie) for Fabula Films, Jonas Dornbach and Janine Jackowski (Toni Erdmann) for Komplizen Film and BAFTA winner and Oscar nominee Paul Webster (Anna Karenina) for Shoebox Films.

"'Spencer is a dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life," said Stewart. "It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name: Spencer. It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her."

"We are extremely grateful for the support of our distributors worldwide, our partners and funders who have shown tremendous commitment to us in these extraordinary times. With Kristen Stewart, Steven Knight and the rest of our fantastic team both in front and behind the camera, we are bringing 'Spencer' to the world.

"It is an independently produced film made for the big screen about an iconic woman's own declaration of independence. We couldn't be more excited," said producers Jonas Dornbach, Janine Jackowski, Juan de Dios Larraín, Paul Webster and Pablo Larraín.

Executive producers are Tom Quinn, Jeff Deutchman and Christina Zisa for Neon and Michael Bloom, Maria Zuckerman and Ryan Heller for Topic Studios.

FilmNation Entertainment handled international sales with all key territories selling out of the Cannes virtual market. The CAA Media Finance group sold to Neon and Topic Studios to distribute in the US, STXinternational will distribute the film in the UK, France, Italy and Benelux and DCM will distribute in Germany.

"Working on the script has been a pleasure. I think it's a different perspective on a story that we don't all know well, but we all feel we now are a part of it," Knight told Variety in an exclusive interview last week.

"And I just found the whole thing fascinating. To talk to people who knew her and to try and get a view of this person — who this person really was — who was an ordinary person in extraordinary situations, is the way I think of her."

Knight said he hadn't watched hit Netflix series The Crown because he didn't want his perspective to be influenced by the show. Season 4 of The Crown, which began streaming in 2020, primarily focuses on the relationship between Lady Diana (played by Emma Corrin) and Prince Charles (Josh O'Connor). The season has been in the spotlight as the relatives of real individuals depicted in the drama have been speaking up about their portrayals.

UK Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden and Lady Diana's brother Charles Spencer later demanded that "The Crown" carry a disclaimer that it is a fiction show, but Netflix declined.

Spencer is supported by the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF), medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, German Federal Film Board (FFA), Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and HessenFilm und Medien.

Martin Scorsese’s Fran Lebowitz Netflix Doc Series is an Irresistible Tonic - Den of Geek

Posted: 28 Jan 2021 03:20 AM PST

It's an attractive dynamic with an intimacy you can't fake. As an interviewer on stage at live events, or in specially filmed segments at Grammercy Park's Player's Club, Scorsese doesn't interrogate. If he does more than prompt then he's used the edit to cut himself out and keep Lebowitz centre frame. His role is to hold open the door for her tightly delivered, rhythmically funny verdicts, to stay out of her way, and to enjoy.

That's not a tall order, because Lebowitz's persona is easy to enjoy. She's quick, opinionated and, now 70, can draw on decades of observation about what's wrong with the world and how it could be fixed if only anybody would listen to her. She's able to apply her comic instincts to apparently any topic, as demonstrated by the wide-ranging questions asked by her audiences. Politics, real estate, money, art, subway travel, tourists, immigration, Me Too, reading, talent…

Young people mostly want to ask her whether New York in the 1970s was as great as it sounds. (Answer: financially bankrupt but culturally alive, it was dirty and dangerous and nostalgia gets us nowhere. Imagine all that but made funny, with a choice anecdote about an apple and a packet of cigarettes.)

As a New York City celebrity since the publication of her first book in 1978, look online and you'll find videos of Lebowitz interviewed by all manner of people. At masterclasses and festival appearances and on TV spots, she delivers the goods as a performing wit in conversation with chat show hosts, novelists, artists, journalists and academics.

These seven half-hours on Netflix though, are the ones to watch. They're a distillation of Fran Lebowitz's voice, directed by a filmmaker who knows NYC as intimately as she does. Scorsese is a terrific illustrator, and the series' blend of archive city footage with free-roaming interludes of Lebowitz pounding its pavements, or wandering its streets in miniature at the Queens Museum's Panorama of the City of New York, make the perfect enrichment. Stay for the end credits, which house yet more clips. (You may as well, because you'll be selecting 'Next Episode' anyway.)

A story of survival and grit comes to UAE theatres this weekend in the form of the gripping South Korean disaster movie. Here are five things to know about 'Ashfall', out in UAE cinemas on January 28.

1. The movie, co-directed by Lee Hae-jun and Kim Byung-seo, is about a mission to prevent a volcanic eruption that is imminent on Mount Paektu, which is located at the northern tip of the Korean Peninsula. If it were to explode, it would have dire consequences for both North and South Korea. "It is a film that tells the story of the people who are trying to protect their values and loved ones against an unprecedented disaster," Lee Hae-jun and Kim Byung-seo said about their film.

2. 'Ashfall' was a smash hit at the box office when it released in South Korea in 2019. The CJ Entertainment movie debuted at the top of the box office at the time, and earned $18.2 million from 2.46 million admissions between December 19 and 22, 2019, according to Variety.

3. The action flick features popular faces Lee Byung-hun, Ha Jung-woo and Don Lee. It's the first time Lee Byung-hun and Ha Jung-woo have worked together in a movie. "Its screenplay was so powerful that I could read it in one stretch," Lee Byung-hun said in an interview with Yonhap News Agency ahead of the film's release. "It's also kind of a buddy film as I act with Ha. I'm looking forward to it a lot."

4. In 'Ashfall', Lee Byung-hun plays a North Korean agent for the first time and his character has a key role in stopping Mount Paektu's eruption. Meanwhile, Ha Jung-woo is part of the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit of the South Korean Army and is sent on a secret mission.

Lee Byung-hun is one of Korea's most bankable stars, and has acted in top movies such as 'The Good, the Bad, the Weird' and 'Inside Men'. He has also starred in American movies 'G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra', the Bruce Willis-led 'Red 2' and 'The Magnificent Seven'. Ha Jung-woo is one of the highest grossing actors in South Korea and has even directed a number of films.

5. 'Ashfall' is an action-packed adventure flick that also features a stellar cast of female actresses. Veteran star Jeon Hye-jin, known for her roles in 'The Throne' 'The Merciless', plays government official Jun Yoo-kyung and her character proposes a plan to stop Mount Paektu's eruption. "The fact that Jun Yoo-kyung pushes ahead believing that even a very small chance is hope for everyone left a big impression on me," Jeon Hye-jin said.

Actress Bae Suzy, who has become a K-Drama favourite after her role in the hit Netflix show 'Start-Up', plays Jo In-Chang's pregnant wife Choi Ji-Young who is coping with a possible disaster on her own.

Don't miss it!

'Ashfall' releases in UAE cinemas on January 28. The movie is dubbed in English with Arabic subtitles.
