Courteney Cox finally has an Emmy nom for ‘Friends’; other Alabama Emmy connections - AL.com

After getting snubbed 10 seasons straight for playing Monica Geller on "Friends," Courteney Cox finally landed an Emmy nomination this week.
While not for her acting, the Birmingham native scored a nod for producing HBO Max's "Friends: The Reunion," which premiered in May.
The show was nominated for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded), scoring Cox and her fellow castmates and executive producers recognition. They're up against "Bo Burnham: Inside," "David Byrne's American Utopia," Dave Chappelle's "8:46," "Hamilton" and "A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote."
"Friends" was one of the highest-rated shows on TV during its 10-season run on NBC, 1994-2004. The series provided a breakthrough role for Cox, who was born and raised in Birmingham, and cemented her fame as an actress. Her character, Monica Geller, was a neat-freak chef who could be bossy, obsessive, anxious, wacky, kind and caring -- sometimes all at once.
Cox's five main co-stars each earned at least one nomination for their acting during the series run.

Alabama had some more indirect connections to this week's Emmy nominations, starting with the Marvel Cinematic Universe's new shows on Disney+.
A recent series of TV commercials for the Alabama-built Hyundai Tucson SUV features characters from the Emmy-nominated "WandaVision" and "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier." The ads boast Captain America (Anthony Mackie) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). Each show scored several nominations, most of them in the technical categories.
You might recall a more direct Alabama connection to "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier." From 2007 to 2009, co-star Wyatt Russell (son of Kurt) was a goalie on the University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team. In the new Marvel Studios superhero series Russell portrays the character John Walker, who was created/picked by the U.S. government to take over for the original Cap, Steve Rogers.
Michael Biehn, the Alabama-born actor known for roles in "The Terminator," "Aliens," "Tombstone" and more, appeared in the second season of "Star Wars" spinoff "The Mandalorian," which garnered a handful of nominations. While Biehn didn't land a nom, his co-stars Giancarlo Esposito, Carl Weathers and Timothy Olyphant did.
Tuskegee native and "Good Morning America" anchor Robin Roberts' production company produced the Lifetime film "Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia," which earned a nomination for Outstanding Television movie, up against "Dolly Parton's Christmas on the Square" "Oslo," "Sylvie's Love" and "Uncle Frank."
National Geographic's "Genius: Aretha" earned several nominations, including one for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie" for her portrayal of Aretha Franklin. The series depicts Franklin recording music in Muscle shoals.
