NeverEnding Story child star Barret Oliver unrecognisable 39 years after iconic film role - The Mirror

The NeverEnding Story's child star Barret Oliver, who played the leading role of Bastian Balthazar Bux in the hit 80s film, looks unrecognisable 39 years on.

And not only does he look totally different, but he also works a completely different job too, with him no-longer acting.

Barret starred as Bastian in the 1984 fantasy film, which was based on the 1979 novel The Neverending Story by Michael Ende.

For those not in the know, the much-loved feature fantasy film follows 10-year-old boy Bastian as he finds a magical book that tells of a young warrior who is given the task of stopping the Nothing.

The young boy who got bullied at school read the book which led him to being transported into a new world.

He soon met with warrior Atreyu, and together they worked to stop a dark force known as the Nothing, from engulfing the world of Fantasia.

The two boys worked hard in order to save the Childlike Empress and her wonderous kingdom.

Before Barret took on the role of Bastian, he had acted in minor roles on the television and in film.

After starring in The NeverEnding story though, he was cast as the lead role in Tim Burton's short film Frankenweenie, before landing the role of the cyborg Daryl in the 1985 film D.A.R.Y.L..

His last film credit was in 1989 feature film S cenes from the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills, with him playing Willie Saravian.

But he now specialises in photography ( twopalms/YouTube)

Last year it was reported that the former child actor, who is now 49 years of age (he will turn 50 in August), works as a photographic historian who specialises in 19th century photographic technology.

According to reports, his work has been displayed in museums and at gallery exhibitions too, with some of his work even used in films.

Becoming an author in his field, in 2007, his book A History of the Woodburytype was published.

Not only this, but he looks worlds away from his role of Bastian, with him trading his bowl-haircut for dreadlocks, complete with a huge beard covering half of his face.

In 2012 he starred in a short film about his craft, which was titled In the Usual Manner, as per the photos above that see him donning a thick beard and glasses.
