SAG Awards: Kieran Culkin hoping to deliver ‘Succession’ its first-ever individual win - Gold Derby

"Succession" has had an interesting ride at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The voters infamously snubbed the drama for its first and second seasons, despite other awards shows falling head over heels for it by year two. However, SAG-AFTRA did an about-face for the third season, honoring "Succession" with the most nominations (five) for a drama series that year and giving it the top trophy for ensemble cast. But still, as HBO's family drama now competes for its fourth and final season, it has yet to receive its first-ever individual win at the SAG Awards. Will Kieran Culkin be the one to claim that title?
As of this writing, Culkin has leading 17/5 odds to win the drama actor race for playing youngest son Roman Roy. His closest competition at the 2024 gala looks to be "Succession" co-star Jeremy Strong (4/1 odds). Rounding out the likely list of Top 5 nominees is Pedro Pascal for "The Last of Us" (9/2 odds), Matthew Macfadyen for "Succession" (5/1 odds) and Billy Crudup for "The Morning Show" (12/1 odds). A fourth "Succession" actor, Brian Cox, sits comfortably in sixth place with 16/1 odds.
Remember that this specific SAG Award category combines lead and supporting performances together. Conversely, the Emmy Awards have separate categories for both, and it's rather notable that this year Culkin made the leap from supporting to lead there due to his increased amount of screen time throughout the final season of "Succession." He is nominated for the Best Drama Actor Emmy alongside the following men, listed in order of their Gold Derby odds: Strong, Bob Odenkirk ("Better Call Saul"), Pascal, Cox and Jeff Bridges ("The Old Man"). (The Emmys were delayed to January due to the Hollywood strikes.)
At last year's SAG Awards, Culkin, Cox and Strong all lost the drama actor race to Lee Jung-jae ("Squid Game"). Lest you think vote-splitting was the determining factor, remember that "Succession's" drama actress nominee Sarah Snook contended alone from her show and still lost to someone from "Squid Game," in this case Jung Ho-Yeon. The guild voters did honor "Succession" with their ensemble prize, though, taking out "Squid Game," "The Handmaid's Tale," "The Morning Show" and "Yellowstone."
Speaking of Snook, she is sitting comfortable in first place at 16/5 odds in the drama actress race for the upcoming SAG Awards. So perhaps the Shiv Roy actress will be the one to deliver "Succession" its first-ever individual win? Currently, Snook's predicted co-nominees are Bella Ramsey for "The Last of Us" (9/2), Jennifer Aniston for "The Morning Show" (11/2 odds), Elizabeth Debicki for "The Crown" (13/2 odds) and Keri Russell for "The Diplomat" (7/1 odds).
